IOM CLASSIC SAIL DAY – HANDICAP EVENT

Rnd1 Don Ash Memorial – Risdon Brook Dam (Sat 28/2/26

Sunny skies greeted eight skippers for the first round of the Don Ash Memorial for IOM Classics with temperatures in the mid-twenties, and a light breeze (from all points of the compass !!) Initially the event was to be held at Forcett Lakes but the call was made to transfer it to RBD following lack of water and generous amount of weed in recent times.

Overall, it was a very pleasant last day of summer at the dam. The wind was forecast from the NE 8-12knts however it was never consistent making it extremely difficult for our PRO of the day, Phil “Trout” Jackman to set a course. Had we waited for consistent breeze we would still be there! Trout did a great job in challenging conditions ably assisted with Stu Harris, thank you gents 😊

There were two standout skippers from today’s event being Andrew Wardrop (1st) and Pete Webberley (2nd) who best managed to sail in the extremely flukey conditions. Between them they scored 7 outright line honour wins out of ten races! Very well sailed gents 😊. Third place went to Pete Turner who sailed his Mad Max with great skill especially in the later part of the day where he strung together 3 x 2nd places in a row.

Phil Turnball (Smiling Assassin) started the day very competitively however he succumbed to a dodgey servo which ended his day prematurely, bad luck Phil. As for the rest of us … well we had our chances during the course day but made some unlucky choices when trying to understand the breeze. A great day was enjoyed by all.

Thank you to Malcom for travelling down south to compete with his newly refurbed Mad Max, a shame a few of your northern members didn’t make the journey as well, next time eh?
