The 2025 Anything Goes Christmas Sail
The spirit of the season was in full sail as 10 Merry Sailors gathered at Puddleduck for the final “Anything Goes” event of 2025. While the fleet lacked a bit of variety, the water was dotted with the familiar silhouettes of DF65s and DF95s—plus a mysterious “Christmas Miracle” brought along by Andrew.
Andrew’s mystery vessel was a grand, large boat that commanded the water. After a bit of holiday fine-tuning, it sailed magnificently across the dam. We’re all still guessing what that majestic craft was; perhaps Andrew will share its secrets soon!
A Gift from the Staff
It was clear the Puddleduck staff had been on the “Nice List” this year. They had topped up the dam so high that the fountain was barely a ripple on the surface—a perfect liquid stage for our holiday regatta.
Battles with the Grinch
The weather, however, seemed to be under the thumb of the Christmas Grinch. The wind was a blustery, swirling mess, shifting from the West, Northwest, and Southwest without warning. It was a test of skill as boats were regularly blown flat, nose-diving into the whitecaps like they were searching for sunken ornaments.
The Racing Festivities
We began with scratch races, but once the DF95s started to dominate the leaderboard, we decided to spread the holiday cheer. Since we had exactly five DF65s and five DF95s (grouping Andrew’s mystery boat with the 95s), we moved into Holiday Relays:
- Round 1: The DF65s dashed through the first lap. As they crossed the line, their DF95 partners took off like reindeer to finish the heat.
- Round 2: We swapped the order, letting the DF95s lead the charge before handing the “baton” to the DF65s.
To add a bit more spice to the eggnog, we tackled one of Shorty’s favourites: The Figure 8. This classic course proved to be the perfect remedy for the swirly, Grinch-like winds, leading to some incredibly close finishes.
The Christmas Feast
The festivities moved to the fancy deck for a well-earned Christmas lunch. The crew refuelled on a holiday spread of lamb pies, pizzas, and chicken focaccias while swapping stories of the morning’s nautical near-misses.
Looking Ahead to 2026
This marks our final Puddleduck sailing post for 2025. We’ve decided to give next week’s DF95 day a rest to enjoy the holidays with family. We will return to the water on January 6th for a combined DF65/RG65 sail.
Merry Christmas to all, and a Happy New Year!
