The early morning cloud was quickly burnt off leaving lovely sunny conditions and a light (0 – 4 knot) North-Easterly breeze at Puddleduck Vineyard today. It was a nice welcome back after our Christmas break. I know that a lot of the skippers were keen to get back to racing today but none as keen as Phil Turnbull who was so eager that he turned up last week. When I asked him what the sailing was like he reported that he ‘cleaned up’! Congratulations Phil!

While there were windless patches on the dam today most skippers found that their DF95 could maintain enough apparent wind and momentum to keep moving from one wind patch to another.

Today we welcomed new skipper Dennis Bowden to the 95 group. Dennis is a regular with the 65ers but is now racing the new red-hulled DF95 No. 163. Happy sailing Dennis!

Jammy was the hands-down winner today. After stranding himself on the final mark in the first race, Jammy recovered the day to finish on the maximum 60 second handicap and an all-podium scorecard.

Second place went to Phil Jackman, 5 points behind but with 2 wins in his tally.

You could have thrown a blanket over the competition for third place as the next 6 skippers were very close.  (Bloody) Geoff Matthews took the honour with a consistent scorecard.  Congratulations Jammy, Trout and Geoff.

Other note-worthy sails included Dave Woolley’s win in the first race – always impressive this as it is the only real scratch race in our program.  Don MacLeod’s sail away win in race No.5 was also striking as was Andrew Thomas’s effort in the final race where he did a similar thing.   You’re only as good as your last race Andrew! Nicely done.

Here’s to good sailing in the year ahead.
