Even though the conditions were not ideal, (a swirling blustery Westerly 2 – 15 knots), it felt good to be sailing at Puddleduck today as we have had a week of harsh weather. I think that sailing on any other day in the last week would not even have been possible.
A-rigs were the universal choice, and the right choice too as it was only in the last couple of races that we were over-powered and getting knocked down.
Bruce Palmer brought along his DF65 just to test out a new A-rig that he had set up. The rig seemed to look good but in the conditions the smaller boat could not match the pace of the 95’s even with a generous handicap.
Al Short had his maiden race win today in race #8 and nicely done too as it featured a cut-throat tacking duel with Gadget right to the finish line. Congratulations Al! The other honorable mention goes to Dave Woolley (Sheep) who finished 4th overall today and he also left with that wonderful feeling of winning the last race of the day. (You are only as good as your last race!)
Third place overall was taken by Peter Sylvester who finished the day strongly after a slow start. (I think that he did the same last time we sailed!) I took out second place, more by keeping my boat out of trouble than by anything else. And Phil Jackman won the day – and very deservedly as he quickly set himself a handicap of 35 seconds and had to carry it most of the day. Well done Trout!
In other news:
Joysway, (the manufacturer of DF yachts), has just opened their own distributorship in Sydney. (https://joysway.au) I was hoping that this might mean cheaper pricing for spares etc but looking on-line there is not too much difference. What I do think is that it might mean that at least we will get a reliable, fully stocked supply.
The State DF95 championships will be held near Port Sorrell on Sat 14th and Sun 15th September. The venue is a dam quite a bit like Puddleduck. These events are always fun and a good chance to meet new people. Entry should be made one week in advance via the ARYA site.
Another event to pencil-in is Risdon Brook’s ‘Show-day – Showdown’ for DF65 and DF95s. It will be an invitation event held on the day of the Hobart Show (Thursday 24th October) and will consist of a DF65 handicap series in the morning, then a scratch series for DF95s after a barbeque lunch. The club is very keen to attract visitors for this one.
And Bodge and Jammy should be making their returns very soon. Jammy and Lynne are booked on the Spirit of Tas for a crossing on Friday night and Bodge and Denise will make the voyage on Saturday. We hope that the seas will calm a bit for all by then!
