Puddleduck Combined Sailing
Puddleduck was in full swing as 12 sailors faced off against a bone-chilling breeze at the start of the day. The brisk air, however, gave way to an almost still calm by the first race. As is tradition with the Duck, the wind eventually settled into a shifting 1-3 knots from the northwest, setting the stage for a course of buoys 2-3-4, sailed twice. As the morning went on, the breeze grew stronger, leading to some tight and exciting finishes.
Our handicap system proved its worth, resulting in seven of the 11 sailors in the DF65-only class claiming a first-place finish. This included our newest member, Ant, who sailed with a borrowed A+ rig from Lisa. A huge congratulations to Ant, and we can’t wait to see more of you on the water!
The results were a testament to the close competition:
- Trout took outright wins in both the combined and DF65-only classes.
- Bluey secured second place on a countback with Trout.
- Tiles once again snuck onto the podium with third place in both classes.
Interestingly, Lisa saw a promotion to second place in the DF65 class despite a fourth-place finish in the combined class. This marked a noticeable difference between the two classes, a first for many, but we have full confidence in our trusty spreadsheet’s calculations!
The day concluded with our bi-monthly luncheon, held in the newly renovated deck area at Puddleduck. The upgraded menu was a huge hit, and in a surprising twist, not everyone ordered the lamb pie! All in all, it was a fantastic day, with no sailors getting snagged on the buoys, and the rescue dinghy staying safely on shore.
A huge thank you to Graeme who took over Sue’s scoring duties today as she could not make it.
