Ah, another glorious morning on the water, where the early birds were engaged in their favorite pre-race ritual: the existential crisis of the sail rig. A+ or A? A weighty question, truly! The wind gods, as is their wont, seemed to be playing a fickle game of ‘conditions bingo’: “Ooh, definitely A+!” … “Hold the phone, it’s A!” … “Wait, maybe both?” You know the drill—a thrilling, high-stakes meteorological debate that ultimately boiled down to ‘A rigs it is.’
The Great GG Submarine Adventure
With rigs (finally) decided, the fleet was gearing up. Almost the entire fleet, that is. Our unfortunate comrade, GG, was clearly aiming for the “Most Dramatic Exit” award. He’d somehow forgotten the cardinal rule—Thou Shalt Tape Thy Front Hatch—and his vessel staged a spectacular, unsolicited dive straight to Davey Jones’ Locker!
We tried the rescue pole, of course, bravely jousting with the waves in approximately 1.8 meters of water, but the wind was having none of it, body-checking our dinghy clear off course. Post-coffee (the essential post-sailing refuel), we made another valiant, if futile, attempt. Alas, the wind had now cranked up to “Gale Force, Slightly Annoyed” status. GG’s boat remains a tribute to the deep.Welcome Backs and Hot Shots
The day was graced by the presence of The Admiral, a man whose attendance has been so sporadic, his name had been dangerously close to being filed under the “Missing in Action (or Just Snoozing)” list. Great to have the old sea dog back!
We also extended a hearty welcome to Phil Mackey, a new Puddleduck sailor (I think he’s from DSS—we’ll check his papers later). Phil handled the shifty wind conditions like a seasoned pro, completely ignoring the “newbie status” and bagging a couple of cheeky first placings. Clearly, some people are just born with the wind in their sails!
Lance Balcombe, a relative newcomer who’s clearly been doing his homework, had a stellar day in the DF65-only class, sailing with a relentless consistency that would make a metronome jealous. He snagged a second overall, punctuated by a first and a respectable smattering of seconds and thirds. Well done, mate, a seriously well-deserved result.
Ant’s Tuning Troubles & Richard’s Rudder Revelation
Ant seemed to be spending more time performing open-boat surgery than sailing, proving the age-old question: Does fiddling with your boat pay off? For Ant, the answer was a resounding ‘kinda,’ netting him a second in the combined class and a third in the DF65-only fleet. Perhaps his secret is a highly tuned wrench?
Speaking of mechanical mischief, Richard had a rough ride after his rudder servo started making “funny noises” before giving up the ghost entirely. The universe, however, has a wicked sense of comic timing. Just as he’d packed up and was diligently assisting Sue with the scoring, his phone buzzed. Notification: A replacement servo had just been delivered at home! Talk about expedited shipping—that’s Amazon Prime-level efficiency!
The Victors
The biggest splash of the day goes to Bodge, who sailed with the ruthless efficiency of a pirate captain, convincingly winning the whole shebang with a staggering lead of six or seven points clear. A masterclass in boat handling! Finally, a truly massive thank you to the unsung heroes of the spreadsheet: Sue and Bonnie, who once again performed an excellent scoring job. Their work ensures the chaos of the race is translated into legible, accurate, and completely indisputable numbers. Cheers!
