There was a good turnout of 15 skippers for todays DF95 sail at Puddleduck Vineyard. I was a bit unsure that the light Easterly that was on the Derwent would make its way to Richmond but it surprised me as there was a couple knots on the dam. It was the first time (in three years) that I have ever seen this wind direction at Puddleduck. That said it proved a difficult direction to set a good course for and there was a couple of races where it was possible to complete the course without tacking.
Special mention today goes to Dave Poon for an outright win in race 3. Dave cleared out really well leaving most of the fleet becalmed and was so far ahead I thought that he was about to lap me! He hung on really well to clinch victory by a bumper from the fast finishing Nick Connor. Dave doesnโt win a lot of races and so it was great that a spontaneous cheer went up from the boys when he crossed the line first. Well sailed Poonie.
Nick Connor finished third overall today with three second places in the mix. Not bad for a newbie!
I managed second place and was pretty happy with that as I felt that I had had more than my fair share of lucky wind shifts.
Todayโs winner by a fair margin was Jammy. He was the only skipper to post consistently good results. Jammy was sporting a new set of light-weight fabric sails (in bright orange!) They looked really good and seemed to set quickly even in a slight puff giving his boat very quick acceleration. Congratulations Jammy.
Have you noticed how popular Puddleduck is with the tourists lately? I can only assume that they are coming to watch the great sailing!
