      Puddleduck – DF95s    12.11.2024

Spring was in the air today with blue skies and a temperature forecast in the low 20s. Shorts, sunscreen, hats and sunglasses were the order of the day, but some decided to sweat it out in long trousers.

We had 15 skippers come along to the Duck today with their DF95s to again contest bragging rights on the pond. There was little breeze on the River Derwent this morning when I left home which normally means there is less at the Duck, and when I arrived it was a millpond.

Shorty #1 (John) was absent today as he was interstate which left Gadget and myself to run the day. I decided to take on the RO duties after two days sailing over the weekend giving my boat to Bruce aka Flash to sail.

Racing commenced after a couple of indecisive course settings by myself with what sniff of a breeze we had coming from the NE, then NW, back to NE. After a couple of races, we swapped courses again after the breeze swung around to the SW, aahh you have got to love sailing at the Duck 😊.

The rescue dinghy wasn’t required today but Andrew (GG) #72 tried his best to move the fountain head on with his boat but came off second best. He soon bounced off and was on his merry way again.

Giving Buoy room again is an ongoing issue and as a friendly reminder if you don’t have overlap within 4 boat lengths you cannot barge your way in. Calling for buoy room prematurely is also a no go. Let’s please play by the rules so we can all enjoy our sailing, we aren’t sailing for sheep stations.

We managed 8 races today with the light and variable winds which included one shortened course R3 in which BG #79 was leading and ended up winning …. I will look forward to that brown paper bag BG 😊.

First place was taken out by John Penman (JP) #96 on 17 points which included 4 race wins after Lisa kindly offered a couple of tuning tips. (Another brown paper bag moment?) One point adrift was the ever-consistent Trout #37 on 18 pts who didn’t score a race win but was on the podium in 4 races and not far off for the remainder. Third place went to another consistent performer, Lisa #35 on 21 pts, who had the first two race wins of the day giving her a 30 sec handicap.

Well sailed to all the other skippers who took part, its not where you come it is the enjoyment factor that keeps bringing us all back each week. Special mention to Poonie #81 (orange) who had a better day than usual, must be the bright orange hull eh? 😊. Also Dicko #674, who drove down from Ulverstone this morning and took part in in the last 3 races, winning R6 😊, good to see you again Dicko.

Thank you again to PDV for providing the well-earned refreshments, and to all the skippers that stayed back for an enjoyable chat. I must admit Lisa’s $10 special (Coffee + cake) looked very good😊

Ducks are like certain RC skippers, no such thing as “Starboard” or “Buoy Room”, they just set a course & go for it regardless !!

Looks like a great day at the duck. Sorry I missed out, I have been working on a boat at clean lift hopefully finishing up on the weekend.

I then am delivering porko rosso to Sydney so I will probably be away for a week or so.
