A Northerly of a good 12 knots set the scene for some fast DF95 racing at Puddleduck Vineyard this morning. This wind direction really suits the dam as it means that we get a good long beat and the course is less impacted by the trees.
The boats were flying and we were getting through races quickly and so we decided to set three lap races. This was also great although it did add an extra element in that you needed to count the number of laps you had done!
With the buoys straining on their tethers it paid to give them a slightly wider birth this morning – but alas many skippers found themselves stranded on a buoy at some time. (No names mentioned!)
Some stronger gusts came through towards the end of the morning causing nose dives and round-ups. We probably could have done well with a smaller rig for the last couple of races but it was not worth changing late in the program. With strandings and gear failure common today only four of the twelve skippers sailing managed to finish every race. Well done by those skippers. And an honourable mention goes to one of those skippers – (Bloody) Geoff Matthews who had a second place and a bold sail away win on his scorecard today.
Today’s winner was Phil Turnbull who was most consistently at the head of the fleet today. Phil was awarded average points for race 4 as his sail number was not recorded when he finished. As it turned out Phil’s winning margin was strong enough that he would have won today’s event even if he was not given this allowance. Lisa Blackwood finished second today with her scorecard also showing how important consistency is in this type of racing. Lisa was really unlucky in one race when she had her boat switched off in an accidental collision with another boat! Buzzy Behrens took out third place. He and Phil Turnbull were the only skippers to win two races this morning. Congratulations Phil, Lisa and Buzzy!

Great write up Shorty. It was very exciting sailing today with a lot going on.
It makes up for those days when we are becalmed 👍

Oh, if anyone goes sailing throughout the week at Puddleduck, the dingy oars are in the pump shed if you need them.
