It was warm and sunny and there was a light Easterly of about 3 knots when we arrived at Puddleduck this morning. This breeze strengthened a little as the morning went on and was perhaps the beginnings of a sea breeze. We don’t often get wind from this direction, or sea breezes for that matter at Puddleduck so at least it gave us something that was a bit different to work with. The most tricky thing was navigating a calm patch in the lee of the cafe and those who maintained momentum across the patch usually did quite well.

Alan’s son Will joined the group today. He has not had a lot of experience as a radio controlled sailer and is most usually at home on a sailboard but he showed some class by performing well today and winning a race.

Phil Turnbull had a ‘forgettable day’ capped by one race in which he had to finish three times – after coming home second he kept hitting the finishing mark and had to keep re-finishing the race. I did check this with other senior skippers as I thought that we had our local rule that it was OK to hit marks so long as you rounded the correct side of them. The consensus however is that this does not apply to the start and finish marks which must be navigated correctly. Our local rule was initiated as it is very difficult to gauge distances at buoys 3 and 4 and it is impossible to get any closer to them but the start and finish are right in front of us and so there are no excuses.

I managed 3rd place today in a boat borrowed from Al. The battle for first place was always going to be between Buzzy and Trout and it was a great battle too, both finishing tied together on 18 points, both well ahead of the bulk of the fleet . It was Trout who took the honours on count back though. Both skippers had two race wins for the day but Trout also had two second places while Buzzy had just the one. Congratulations and well sailed to you both.

At coffee I was able to let the crew know that after about 4 years organising the DF95 sailing at Puddleduck I too would like a bit of a rest. So while I am happy to keep things going for a few more events I really would like someone to put their hand up to do the job. Its not too onerous and I would be happy to help you get started!
