It was a sunny but cool morning at Puddleduck where a recalcitrant changeable 5 knot Westerly set the scene for close DF95 racing.
We welcomed Scott Brain and Ben Short as guests today. Scott is a regular with the DSS group but has recently launched himself on the DF95 circuit. Unfortunately electronics issues forced an early finish to the day for Scott. We hope that you had a good day anyway Scott – the wind isn’t always this grumpy at the vineyard. Ben is on school holidays and always enjoys taking on his Grandad at sailing. Today he finished just one place behind Al.
Seventeen skippers is just about a record for DF95’s at Puddleduck and with the wind frequently propelling the rear of the fleet towards the front the close racing gave the dam a crowded feel. Keeping out of the way of others was harder than normal as wind shifts of 90 degrees frequently turned good clearance into unavoidable contact. Still it was those skippers who steered a wide birth around trouble that did well.
An honorable mention goes to the big friendly giant Andrew Thomas who sailed a beautiful last race of the day and gets to take home the winning feeling.
Wayne Behrens started the day with a race win, which always makes things hard but he continued to regularly find the podium and earned third place overall today. Peter Ross (Rosco) has been away working in Queensland for the last few months and will return tomorrow but still managed to squeeze in a Puddleduck event on a flying trip home. He made the most of it by finishing second overall. Today’s winner was Chris Wood whose score card featured back to back wins in races 4 and 5. Congratulations Buzzy, Rosco and Chris.
After racing we enjoyed our coffee with a rather nice piece of slice prepared by Gadget. Delicious thank you Gadget. A couple of other guests in the cafe commented about how much they enjoyed watching the racing and how it looked like a lot of fun. – They were right.
