      Puddleduck – DF95s    20.05.25

Another lovely autumn day albeit a chilly one greeted 12 skippers to contest another DF95 handicap day. The wind, well breeze 0-3knts was mostly coming from the NW but at times went up in the air and then from the SW just to keep us all on our toes.

Many a groan could be heard complaining about the breeze “where is it coming from now” but hey that is sailing at the Duck 😊. At times you could be 1-2 boat lengths away from your nearest competitor only to see them disappearing down the course in a breeze that totally missed you.

We were without Shorty today who has taken a break from sailing this week to spend time bushwalking with family visiting from interstate. No rescue choppers Shorty ! In Shorty’s absence we adopted his famous figure eight course (S-2-1-3-4, twice round).

With no dedicated scorer, the first boat taking line honours was required to score the results, ably assisted with second place getter. This worked well until later in the morning when the handicaps took effect seeing 6-8 boats finishing at the same time which saw some hastily scribbled down sail numbers, great racing 😊

Chris “Woody” Woods joined us today after a considerable absence from sailing at the Duck and took no time at all settling in taking line honours in the first two races giving himself a 30sec handicap. Winning the first couple of races isn’t always great as you are always chasing the fleet for the rest of the morning. Woody finished a very credible third place today with 29 points, well sailed Woody and welcome back to the Duck😊

It was Trout today who took bragging rights on 26pts, well sailed Trout! Second place was myself coming in second one point adrift. Scores were close down the score sheet with some very close competitive sailing throughout the morning, well sailed by all skippers 😊

Poonie on the other hand had a day to forget with two trips out in the dinghy to rescue his boat, with the last time due to a dead battery. There is always next week Poonie, we know you can have better days.

From a safety perspective, we need to ensure that who ever goes out in the dinghy has a helping hand to assist bringing the dinghy back to shore, or preferably back to the jetty for the remainder of the morning. Also, as a reminder, we shouldn’t have any more than 2-3 people on the jetty at the same time. We have been very fortunate that we haven’t experienced any incidents with the dinghy / jetty, and with new owners of PDV, we certainly don’t want to jeopardize our relationship and the use of PDV facilities.

On a brighter note, see you all next week at the Duck 😊

Great write up Bodge and congrats for second place. It felt like Shorty was there in spirit as sailed his famous figure 8 course 🙂.

We’ll done to Trout and Woody and also Dennis for a healthy fifth place.
