Summer has been generous this year by providing us with so many wonderful sailing days. Warm, sunny and with a consistent North-Westerly breeze of 2 – 4 knots. The good conditions brought 14 skippers to Puddleduck Vineyard this morning but unfortunately Dave Poon had mechanical issues even before the first race and could not compete today.

The North Westerly direction enabled us to set a good challenging course with a beat from buoy 4 to buoy 2 which offered skippers a real choice in the way that they should go about it. There did seem to be an unusual wind void just in front of the café though which frequently brought skippers from rags to riches or conversely from riches to rags if you found it at the wrong time. It was hard to figure the reason for this hole as it was on the lee shore and there was generally plenty of wind elsewhere on the dam.

We welcomed guest David Short today. (Yes, he is a cousin.) David is well known to many of the skippers as he has a history in yachting in Hobart but today was his first day racing a radio-controlled boat. He said that he really enjoyed his day – both for the sailing and for meeting old faces again.

The rescue dinghy was in frequent use today. When we do not have a dedicated Race Officer boats often go AWOL while skippers attend to race duties.

On a day when there were race wins well down the scorecard it was Phil Jackman who took third spot with consistent results throughout the day. Jammy Jones took out second place with two race wins. But it was JP – John Penman who took overall honours today benefitting well from discards to leave a strong set of results. Those who also sail with the Risdon Brook group would be interested to know that JP has just secured the lease of the club IOM. I reckon it will not be long before we see him at the front of that fleet too. Congratulations to John, Jammy and Trout!

Coffee and a chat at the café is always enjoyable – and for those that wish to stay a little longer, next Tuesday (1st April) will be a ‘stay-for-lunch-if-you-wish’ day. No its not an April fool’s joke it is actually happening!

Yes I made a mistake! Next race and the’ stay-for-lunch-if-you-wish’ is on Tuesday 1st April! Now corrected in the report above. Thanks to Lisa for spotting it.
