It was a cool and calm start to sailing at Puddleduck Vineyard but as the morning proceeded the sun added an unseasonable note of warmth and a shifty southerly wind of 0 – 5 knots lent itself to good sailing conditions.
The water level was unusually high this morning due to Saturday’s downpour, so high in fact that the fountain spout was barely visible above the waterline. A bucket was secured to it as a warning to prevent misadventure.
Fifteen skippers turned up which gave a good fleet size for racing DF95’s on the dam. Unfortunately both Don MacLeod and Nick Connor succumbed to gear problems early in the event. Nick took on the PRO role for the rest of the morning and did a great job sorting out a few very tight finishes. Thanks Nick.
Richard Wylie scores a special mention today for two well sailed race wins. There could have been – should have been – a third race win too as he was unofficially the winner of the second race of the day. In that race confusion erupted after some skippers thought the race had finished while others thought there was another lap to go and in the chaos no-one grabbed the pen to write down the finishing order. You can call that one a moral victory anyway Tiles, and great sailing today too!
I managed third place overall today with some respectable consistency after discarding a DNF with gear failure.
It was Buzzy Behrens who took out second place. Today was Buzzy’s third recent DF95 appearance at Puddleduck and each time he has made it to the podium. You have set yourself a high bar Wayne.
Lisa Blackwood took overall honours and though just three points ahead it was a dominant performance especially considering that she won the first two races giving herself an immediate 30 second handicap and another win in race 5 boosted her penalty to 45 seconds. Awesome sailing Lisa!
Renovations to Puddleduck mean that it is ‘fine dining’ inside the cafe (should I say restaurant) and the skippers now have our after party on the outside tables. Best to keep it casual and it is getting warmer anyway. Good coffee and chat as always
