It was very stormy when I woke this morning and I was wondering if we would be sailing at all today. But Puddleduck is different from Hobart and when we arrived it certainly didn’t seem as tumoltous on the dam as it looked on the Derwent. So much so in fact that while most of the boys suited up their B rigs a couple tried the A and as the morning proceeded more and more skippers changed up. Generally speaking it was the A-rigs that did better today. Knock-downs and nose-dives were actually few though thew wind was swirling and on occasions willy willies scudded across the dam. All up a challenging day.
Given the conditions it was surprising that most skippers finished all races. (In fact the only one not to was due to a rig change.) And the rescue dinghy was not used! – Good seamanship skippers!
I forgot to bring my computer this morning but was tempted to ‘do an Anthony Green’ and make an early call on the result awarding the day to John Penman. Just as well I didn’t as it was Phil Jackman who won the day. Trout was the only skipper to sail with any sort of consistency at all and that usually brings its rewards in series sailing. Most skippers did enjoy some success today and everyone made the podium at some stage but, under the conditions, most also had their share of mishaps and poor performances as well. JP did get second place, again sailing from the back of the fleet after dashing his handicap by doing well early in the day. Third place was taken out by Ron Cullen who has taken a few big steps up in performance in recent weeks and he well deserves his share of the podium today. Congratulations Trout, JP and Gadget.
As I write this the wind has really whipped up a bit so I think that we had the best bit of the day.
