      Summer Series Tasmania Championships

It definitely was good weather for ducks today, Dragon Force and RG’s not so much.

Fickle light winds, some drizzle at times and the occasional floating weed hookup were par for the day.

No-one was spared the agony of picking some up and then it taking an agonisingly long time to get back to the dock to clear it.

Despite these setbacks and frustrations our talented PRO Stuart Harris kept us on track and happy with suitable course variations and multiple weed breaks.

Maurice Jones DF#88 and Ian Dickinson DF#96 joined us from the North West, while Andy Hamilton RG #43 and Ted Stevens RG #4 came down from Launceston for the event.

Puddleduck put on a great lunch of meat and salad roll + soup which went down very well. The bottomless cups of coffee and tea were very much appreciated too.

At lunch we were treated to a very special tasting and release of a vintage named in honour of Peter Smith, the 2018 TGR Riesling by senior staff and family. It was especially poignant as a Memorial Trophy has been made and the honour of being the first name on it is up for grabs this weekend. Many thanks to Jackie, Sue, Darren, Tim and family for honouring us with this first ever tasting of this well balanced wine. Bottles of this vintage have also been donated as prizes for the first three place getters in Peter Smith Memorial Races.

First blood today was for Ian ‘Dicko’ Dickinson   #96 who sprang out of the blocks and took command early, unfortunately Dicko suffered weed mugging in the following three race to end the day in fourth place.

Locals were quick to pounce on Dicko’s misfortune with Gerald Stevens#02, Lisa Blackwood #59 and then Col Johnson #23 winning the next three races.

Peter Morrow #78 aka Pink Bits made a strong showing today and would have placed higher than fifth if not for striking trouble in races six and seven.

Don MacLeod #99 is comparatively new to DF65’s but is quickly learning their strengths and weaknesses. Don competed well and can be satisfied with his sixth place so far.

Another of our Northern Raiders Maurice Jones #88 didn’t show his true potential in this first day. Frustrated by the light winds and weed Maurice will bounce back from day one’s  7th place to a much higher score tomorrow.

Gear failure struck our Geoff Mathews #80 today, effectively sidelining him for the last 5 races. We look forward to seeing Geoff back up to speed tomorrow.

Puddleduck stalwarts Tony Hurd #32 and Ron Barrett #71 both had race days to forget that can and do happen to everyone in this game.

Hope to see you both in the battles tomorrow lads.

RG 65 Class sailors Ted Stevens #4 and Andy Hamilton #43 were in a class of their own today, literally. Both sailed well and were the first two boats over the finish line regularly.

      Results for day one

Mike Holbrook deserves special mention as our talented media man covering this event. All photos and video are to be credited to Viper Racing Tasmania.

Tomorrow draws the conclusion of the Summer Series and following the last races of the day prizes for this event and also the Peter Smith Memorial will be announced.

      Good luck everyone.
