Forcett Lakes – IOM Classic Day

      4th November, 2023

Eleven skippers fronted upto Forcett Lakes to contest another IOM classic day. Forecast was for overcast conditions with southerly breeze of 10-15 knts. We arrived to see light NW winds 2-5knts that swung around to the west , south west , easterly throughout the day remaining light throughout the racing.

It made setting a course quite difficult to enable a proper beat to windward with various courses tried but not perfect. In a some of the later races, the boats rounded the top mark being on a run / broad reach to the gate only having to sheet in close hauled for the last 20 metres … interesting.

The format involved a handicap system of 15 sec for a win, 10 sec for second and 5 sec for third with no dropped races, and at the end of the day nine of the eleven skippers ended up with a handicap, with close racing being the order of the day with 7 different skippers taking line honours.

There were the usual rigging issues, loose battery etc that kept some of the boats from completing all races but by race 10 we still had 9 boats on the water.

First place went to Phil Jackman sailing Pete Webberley’s spare TS2 on 37 Points. Phil only had one outright win but his worst race (apart from R9 where he came 9th) was 5th place great consistent racing Phil.😊. Wayne & Leigh Behrens, who shared the skipper duties took out 2nd place on 41 points, with third place going to Pete Webberley on 44 points. Well sailed by all skippers in sometimes frustrating conditions.

Special thank you to Pete Webberley for supplying the tent, rescue boat, BBQ and thank you gifts , it was greatly appreciated by all who attended today.😊

The BBQ post sailing was greatly enjoyed by all that attended, and we are all looking forward to the next IOM Classic Day in the first quarter of 2024.
