Forcett Lakes – IOM Classic Day
5th October, 2024
Seven skippers fronted upto Forcett Lakes today to contest another IOM classic day. A gusty NW wind swinging a little more in the northerly direction before strengthening from the west around midday.
Our PRO for the day, Leigh Behrens, had envisaged 10 races with one drop before lunch. From memory (which isn’t great 😊) we managed 3-4 races with A rigs before the wind strengthen seeing all competitors out of control at some point, before swapping out to B rigs for the remainder of the day.
At one point a gust came through the carpark sending the official tent off like a spinnaker, thankfully secured by water filled drums. Unfortunately, part of the tent landed on Pete’s second boat #158 causing a broken side-stay and bent rudder, which caused timeout for repairs. There were a few other casualties throughout the day which left only 4 boats competing races 9 & 10.
Special mention to Rod Marshall who launched his boat only to watch it sail beautifully across the lake without having turned the battery on. He advised later that he must have accidently turned it off whilst launching it … of course Rod, we all believe you 😊
Overall, racing was very competitive with all skippers enduring a handicap throughout the day. Today’s winner was again Pete Webberley with his TS2 on 20 points, well sailed Pete ! There was a tie for second and third places with myself taking second on countback from Wayne “Buzzy” Behrens.
We had a visitor from the NW club, Colin Hills who made the special journey down to Forcett today with his beautifully presented bright Orange Tassie Devil. Colin didn’t have the best of days but has vowed to return, let’s hope so 😊. We also had a spectator today “Bloody Geoff” who took time out from his 84th birthday celebrations to witness some great close racing …Happy birthday Geoff 😊
A special thank you to Leigh Behrens for taking on the role of PRO for the day, and Pete Webberley for organising the day along with supplying the tent, rescue boat and spare TS2 for me to sail today.
Thank you to all skippers, it was a very enjoyable day.
