Forcett Lakes – IOM “Woodie” Day

      Saturday 2/12/2023

Eleven skippers fronted upto Forcett Lakes to contest another IOM “Woodie” day. Forecast was for mild overcast conditions with southerly breeze of 4-10 knts. We arrived to see light SE winds 2-5knts that swung around to the southwest to easterly throughout the day remaining light throughout the racing.

It made it difficult for our PRO Leigh Behrens to set a course that allowed a proper beat to windward with various courses tried but not perfect. There was a steady SW breeze at the top mark, died out half way down the course with variable wind shifts down at the gate rounding.

The format involved a handicap system of 15 sec for a win, 10 sec for second and 5 sec for third with no dropped races, and at the end of the day ten of the eleven skippers ended up with a handicap, with close racing being the order of the day with 7 different skippers taking line honours from eleven races.

There were no boat casualties throughout the day with all boats completing the last race. In race 6 there was a dead heat finish between Phil Jackman and Rod Marshall (6th / 7th place) but the spreadsheet results didn’t allow for half points so I awarded Rod 6th and Phil 7th to keep it as fair as possible.

First place went to Phil Jackman on 45 (or 44.5) Points. Phil had three outright wins, and two 2nd places with a worst result of 8th place which shows again how consistent results pays dividends. Well sailed Phil.😊.  Second place on 54 points went to Ricky Price with two outright wins and sailed very consistently whilst trying to cook himself with a flannie and T shirt on a 22 Deg day, nice work Rick 😊. Third place went to Greg Ash on 57 points who managed 3 x 4th places in R3, R4, R5, then won R6 outright, R7 came 2nd place, R8 finished 3rd place. Very well sailed Greg 😊

Overall, racing was very close with very little between the boats and skippers during the course of the day, with being in the right spot at the right time with a bit of luck being the order of the day.

Special thank you to Leigh Behrens for taking on the PRO duties at very late notice, it was greatly appreciated by all. Leigh was ably supported by Graeme Cooksey who assisted in the results department, thank you gents. Also thank you to Pete Webberley for supplying the tent, rescue boat, BBQ , it was greatly appreciated by all who attended today.😊

The BBQ post sailing was greatly enjoyed by all that attended, and we are all looking forward to the next IOM “Woodie” Day in 2024.
