Setting up on the Western side of Puddleduck pond certainly made a difference to the feel of the Regatta this year.

That aside, Puddleduck Management and staff did a magnificent job of looking after us as usual in providing a gathering space on what was for them a very busy day, some delicious food for our lunch and of course the magnificent wine prizes and perpetual trophy at the Regattas conclusion.

Puddleduck Vineyard Manager Nick was a power of strength during setup and had everything perfectly organised for us including running more water into the pond, building a solid temporary jetty to launch and retrieve our boats from and setting up a well provisioned tea/coffee table for use throughout the day.

Whilst the weather was quite summery and pleasant the fickleness of the breezes tested everybody to their limits.

Our PRO Lisa did a wonderful job in keeping the races flowing throughout the day with many creative course changes despite the oft changing wind direction and strengths.

On the scoring desk and doing a magnificent job was our Sue and husband Graeme. These folks have just been terrific in their support and attendance, without which we would be a lot poorer off. Little Bonny came down to help out and check out the duck action today too, at least as far as her leash permitted.

It was great to have Dicko back @ the Duck again this year. Dicko is the current secretary of the NWRYC, has been with us from the very beginning and who is a terrific supporter of our event.  Both he and Molly were beautifully behaved as always. 😉

Our group pitched in and were wonderfully supportive in helping setup before, during and after the Regatta was run. Thanks everyone, you just remind me yet again what a terrific group we have here.

What else? Oh yes the Racing!!

As referred to above, the conditions tested the nerves of everyone all day with some big swings between the North and Easterly quadrant. For the first time ever the little piece of magic created by our Gadget to get our races started on time, (with built in handicap feature) failed us. After lunch it chucked a wobbly by chopping off the last 10-15 seconds of the countdown. After three starts in a row were aborted, Lisa improvised and finished the countdown manually for all races thereafter. Well done.

Was delighted to see Kyle and Ryan Stewart come down to visit the Regatta this afternoon. They brought a drone with them and took done footage of the last two races run on the day. As this was a first for the Peter Smith Regatta I am really looking forward to seeing this memorable father/son team effort.

We had it all today, two fountin’ mountin’s a swath of missed buoys and Phil’s little hide and seek adventure underneath the verandah in race 14.

Some great competitive starts and finishes, very gentlemanly conduct by way of penalties taken and huge fellowship all round. A great day out in anyone’s language.

Thank you everyone who attended for making this such an enjoyable event.

Here are the results from the racing today:

      David Poon      108

Congratulations Dicko on a superlative sail and awesome decision making during it. I couldn’t think of anyone more deserving to have his name on the perpetual Peter Smith Memorial Trophy today than you. Well done mate.

Here are some photo’s from the presentation of prizes made by Jackie and Sue

After extenstive testing of the handicap timer, I have come to the conclusion that the arduino processor is susceptible to low voltage drop outs which I have been able to reproduce.

As this is the first time we used the timer for an extended period, the voltage on the battery got low enough to cause the  processor to behave eradically. Until now, we have only used the timer for two hours at a time on our Tuesday sailing sessions.

Congratulations to Lisa as that was the first thing she said, “Is the battery going flat?”

Ironically, I actually had a spare battery in the car but didn’t think about changing it over. DOH!

Good work Gadget! Never doubted you would solve the mystery!
