A strong, gusty North Westerly greeted us this morning when we arrived at Puddleduck Vineyard.  A-rigs were the right choice for the day.  The dam at Puddleduck does not capture the same amount of wind and does not build waves like other venues and so you can enjoy sailing with a big rig in the wind while at other venues sailing may not even be possible. Fab Phil Watkins was the only skipper to rig the B but soon found out that ‘size does matter’ and he quickly suited up.

Twelve skippers was a good turn-out. Bruce Palmer was again the scribe for the day and had to call quite a few finishes decided only by a bumper. Thanks as always Bruce.

Buoy snaring was quite common. It is worth remembering that when the wind is strong the buoys are straining on their mooring ropes and so there is likely to be an underwater hazard on the windward side of the buoy.

The honorable mention today goes to Dave Poon who was sailing very comfortably in the windy conditions and his scorecard included a third place podium. Well sailed Dave. In fact all skippers found the podium at some stage today and there were race wins recorded from skippers well down the card. I think that this usually means a good day out for all.

It was great to see Dave Woolley (Sheep) back after a bit of an absence with knee problems. Dave’s time off hasn’t hurt him at all as he claimed two race wins and was always in the hunt. We hope that you are able to make it to sailing regularly Dave.

I managed to come away with ‘a bronze’ today after finishing the day strongly.  That ‘smiling assassin’ Phil Turnbull took the second place silver medal finishing the day with a win. I always think that a win in the last race is something pretty good as you can enjoy the glow for a couple of days and it doesn’t even effect your next race handicap! And Lisa Blackwood took gold by a fair margin and was easily the most consistently good skipper.  Lisa quickly took her handicap to the maximum 45 seconds and well deserved victory today. Congratulations Lisa.

A reminder that next week’s DF65 event will be a ‘stay for delicious café lunch day’ for those that wish to do so.

      Great write up shorty.

It was a bit challenging sailing in the stronger wind which caused a bit of mayhem around the course.

I’d like to thank you for picking me up on a rule I wasn’t familiar with. I had performed a tack from port to starboard inside the “zone” a couple of times when rounding buoy 2 when there was a boat already on starboard near me. After the tack, it almost felt like I was barging so I checked with the affected sailors to see if they were OK with what I had done. Because we were now both on starboard, we felt that I was OK and had rights to take the inside track around the buoy.

I think I have found the rule which indicates that I was in the wrong and I had no rights forcing the other boat to give me buoy room.

I thought I would post it in case other people are not familiar with the rule.

A good pickup on an often poorly understood rule Gadget. Great to reminder to all of us. Everyone sailing by the rule book results in an enjoyable day for everyone involved.
