Conditions were very gusty at Puddleduck this morning but as there were considerable light patches about during our rigging up time all skippers chose A-rigs. This might have been a mistake as the wind did fill in throughout the morning. In our last race we were all over-powered and maintaining steerage  became a real issue and knockdowns and nose-dives were common.

If you lost sight of your boat even for a few moments you found yourself in trouble: on the bank, on a buoy or under the café. Henry Finis went to rescue his boat which was jammed under the café  and then we thought that we would have to rescue Henry as he seemed to be jammed under the café too.

Collisions and raft-ups were common and while I do advocate for more legalistic adherence to the basic rules – today was a day where offenders could sometimes be excused as their boat was out of control at the time of the collision.

I reckon that we are pretty close to the maximum number of 95’s that we should be racing on a dam the size of Puddleduck especially in challenging conditions. So if numbers continue to grow we will probably look towards splitting into two fleets and alternate races between the fleets. (Two races for fleet A then two races for fleet B).

Today we welcomed John Penman to Puddleduck. John has both a DF65 and a DF95 and is keen to become a regular. Unfortunately he had rudder servo issues today and was forced to retire after the first race. Welcome all the same John – we hope that you enjoy your racing.

There was an anomaly in the scoring today (same boat apparently finishing twice in race#5). I thought that we had this sorted in the post race count-up but Gadgets hat-cam video proved otherwise. Thanks to his vigilance and technological wizardry we can get video conformation of results! The results have now been corrected and it has made a difference to the overall placings too. So sorry Trout – we now have to hand third position over to Dave Woolley.

So the placings: Third place overall now goes to the Sheep – Dave Woolley with two race wins in his scorecard. Second today goes to Bodge with a really consistent set of results. And Jammy won the day a clear 5 points ahead. It was the first DF95 race for both Jammy and Bodge after their extended breaks. A holiday does no harm at all! Congratulations to Sheep, Bodge and Jammy.

Just a reminder that next DF95 day – that is October 1st (next fortnight) – will be a ‘stay-on-for-lunch-at-Puddleduck’ day (for those who wish to do so).

Thanks as always to our PRO Flash Bruce Palmer.
