It was a beautiful sunny morning and with a decent breeze forecasted a big fleet turned out at ‘The Duck”. Thirteen starters in all today – including one DF65 – a strong fleet particularly as a few of our regulars were away.

(Bloody) Geoff Mathews was again missing from the action. We understand that Geoff is struggling a bit with health at the moment – so if you are reading this Geoff – we are missing you mate and hope that you are well enough to be joining us again shortly.

Today we tried a slightly different course in the 0 – 10 knot North-westerly that built throughout the morning. A figure 8 (or bow-tie) course proved to work really well. It somehow seemed to make the dam feel a little bigger even though the fleet was large.

Henry Finnis sailed his first races with us today and showed he knows how to find his way around the course. I reckon that finishing every race of a series is a bit of a triumph when you first take up this sport so well done and hang in there Henry.

Third place today was taken by Phill Jackman, Second was Mat Gray and the winner was Lisa Blackwood. Always classy sailing from these skippers.

A closer study of the results is revealing too. The top three didn’t win more races than any of the rest of the skippers – in fact Trout and Mat didn’t win a race today! But the difference was that they never finished poorly. Trout carried a 5th as his worst performance and Lisa and Mat’s worst performance was 4th. The secret to success in series sailing – never give up on a race – make sure that you don’t finish badly!

During our coffee chat Bruce suggested an adventure trip to Orford for the DF65’s. A great idea! Lets see if we can make it to happen!
