Puddleduck Vineyard Combined Class Sailing
When I did the Safety at Sea course at the RYCT back when I crewed on a DSS yacht, a tip was not to go out sailing when three isobars cross Tasmania. Well, this is what we had today….
Only the bravest of brave sailors ventured out today to test their skills in strong wind sailing.
The morning started off reasonable with the majority of sailors choosing their A rigs. Flash only had an A+ rig so we soon swapped that out with my spare A sail. Lisa started off with C rig but soon changed to a B rig.
The wind eventually strengthened so much that during race 6, we decided to call it off and go in for an early coffee.
Sue put up with some trying conditions where the wind even blew her table over! Scoring can be hectic at the best of times and Sue did a magnificent job, with the help of Graeme, to try and catch all the numbers as they crossed the finish line with everything blowing and flapping around them.
Finishing places may not be as accurate as they normally are because it was very trying today. We’ll have to call on the third umpire (hat cam), to try and sort some of them out, if they happen to be in shot.
We were graced with the attendance of Gerald today as a spectator, and he was spotted taking a bit of video. It will be great to see what action shots he managed to capture.
Upcoming Events
DF95 sailing – Tuesday 3 September
DF65 Sail at Risdon Brook Dam – Thursday 24 October (Show Day)
Lisa advised that the RYBT will be inviting Puddleduck sailors, DSS sailors and others for a DF65 sail and BBQ on Show Day.
DF65’s to sail in the morning and DF95’s to sail in the afternoon. I dare say, more information to follow.*** Video replay has been reviewed and following is the revised finishing order ****
Congratulations to Fab for taking home the gold medal today on 15 points 👍
Followed very close by Phil T in silver medal position on 16 points.
Then Lisa in bronze medal position with 17 points.
Due to the recalculation of the spreadsheet after RG’s are filtered, Lisa gets second and Phil T gets third in the DF65 only class.
A note for sailors… I did notice on more than one occasion where due to parallax error, sailors didn’t actually cross the finishing line and ended up with a DNF! That would have changed the finishing order on the sheet.

Nice action video there Gerald. Thank you for sharing. I love how you can zoom in for the close up. Unfortunately, not possible with a hat cam.
Following are some of my wobbly hat cam videos…

Hi guys. I hope this is OK to post here. I note you have a couple of RG65s sailing there. I have Kyle’s previous Goth, now converted to swing rigs (as new, used perhaps 4 times) that spends too much time just sitting in my yacht storage bedroom, and needs to go to a new owner who will use it as it is deserved to be used. Also has the original conventional rigs, including a brand new set of A sails not even rigged up yet. Good quality winch, servo etc. Looking for $1000 ono, but would be very interested in taking a DF95 in part / full exchange. I’m coming to Hobart Friday afternoon (30th) and coming back Saturday morning early, I can bring the boat with me if anyone is interested in having a look.
Ring me on 0418 130 375 or email 996businesstax@gmail.com
cheers
Peter Haworth
