      DF65 / RG65 sailing at Puddleduck Vineyard – 15.04.2025

A lovely autumns day greeted 19 skippers today to “The Duck” to compete for bragging rights for the day. A gentle 1 knt breeze from the NW was enough to get us started although slightly delayed. Unfortunately, Don’s boat #99 suffered electrical issues before R1 and had to be rescued via the dinghy and ended his day quite abruptly.

With 18 boats on the water, a simple course to buoy 2, 3, 4 twice round was adopted and generally most sailing was pretty clean, with a few penalties being completed as a matter of course. As the morning wore on, the breeze strengthened to 2-3 knts (hold onto your hats stuff😊) which provided a very pleasant days sailing.

We welcomed Greg Wing and his wife from Orford sailing group today along with Richard and his wife and they ended up having a memorable day all for the wrong reasons.

We had just started R8 and Greg was a little late to the start line before I started hearing moans and gasps from the skippers only to witness Greg’s boat sink near the start line. It was Australia II all over again but happened much quicker. Greg and I jumped in the dinghy to see if we could retrieve it from the murky depths of the pond without any luck. Darren (owner of PDV) quickly put together an extra-long pole with a T piece on the end and we swept over the DF65 graveyard with no further luck. I believe Greg may come back during the week to have another go at retrieving his super yacht, lets hope for a better result, and doesn’t turn out to be a permanent dive wreck.

Onto the results … In the combined fleet, it was Stuart with his RG65 on 21 pts which included 3 race wins 😊, followed very closely by Lisa on 22pts, and Jammy third on 26pts. Neither Lisa or Jammy had any race wins, just plenty of consistency throughout the morning.

In the DF only class, it was Lisa, Jammy and Trout who took the podium positions, but there were plenty of skippers not far away. Well sailed by all, and our thoughts go out to Greg for the loss of DF65 #91 RIP 🙁  PS I hope you had an enjoyable lunch 😊

Thank you again to PDV staff who always take care of us yachties, with their hospitality 😊 and to Sue (& guard dog Bonnie) for their duties scoring and coffee orders 😊, it is greatly appreciated.

Have a happy and safe Easter to all,

      Bodge

DF65 #91 has been raised (unlike the Titanic 🙂

Phil “Smiling Assassin” decided to have a go at retrieval and was successful ! 🙂

Receiver light was still on, but rudder servo was dead. No cracked hull, hatch cover had peeled back.
