With the weather forecast shouting doom and gloom and our two intrepid organisers out galavanting about the country, we still managed to collect a fleet of 10 boats to race today.
Really, the conditions were not bad by Puddleduck standards except for the less than favourable breeze direction from the South. With no rain and a somewhat steady 10/12 knots the fleet got underway at the allotted time and enjoyed 10 quick races using the big circle course, all buoys to port. Final leg was a beat to the line from number 1 and proved to be a challenge for all with tight finishes and close covering tactics right up to the line.
Nick #48 had some teething problems with the new boat early on. Steering was slow and erratic with the rudder refusing to return to a central position when released. The rudder shaft binding on the bulkhead cradle proved to be the culprit and this put Nick out of races 4 and 5.
Poonie #181 put in another solid day with Dennis #163 showing great consistency throughout the morning also.
Cookie #52 couldn’t find his best today with some fairly disparate results as did the Admiral #23 before recording just one victory for the morning in race 6.
The Smiling Assassin #32 did better as the morning wore on. Like many other skippers he found the tricky Southerly breeze challenging before finally winning outright in race 8 and followed that with a second in the next.
Fab #17 has been a big improver over the last 12 months. Today our Phil showed good consistency again, capping this with a well deserved victory in race 9 giving him third place in the DF65 only class.
Trout #11 sailed well today, keeping his fellow greyhounds honest. Finishing with 4 first places in the DF65 only group and recording only two races out of the 10 sailed where he wasn’t a podium finisher has to count as yet another stellar day for the Troutster.
Sharing the podiums with Trout and recording 5 second places and 3 firsts in the DF65 group was Lisa #35. The 2024 National champion was unstoppable today, putting on a master class and despite finishing with a massive 75 second handicap was still claiming podium positions right to the end.
Overall winner today was Stuart #8. With 4 firsts, a second and 3 thirds there was no match for the RG greyhound today.
Congratulations to all on a good days racing and a most enjoyable outing for the Puddleduck skippers.
Big thank you to Sue for keeping it all tidy and of course our ever popular mascot Bonney for being lovable and keeping Sue’s lap warm.
