A wild, swirling and blustery North-Westerly to South-Westerly wind with gusts up to 20 knots prevailed at Puddleduck Vineyard for today’s DF95 sailing. Wind shifts were so dramatic that it was not uncommon for two boats to be sailing in the same direction a metre apart but on different tacks. Keeping out of trouble was one of the secrets to success today and skippers had to issue a fair amount of forgiveness as boats were at times beyond the control of their skipper.
Fab Phil Watkins day finished before it started with his boat succumbing to electronics failure. Phil however stayed on to watch and earned himself the hero of the day MVP award by manning the dinghy when Trout’s boat got snared on the fountain.
And speaking of heroes, Henry Finnis ‘s efforts today were also worthy of mention. Henry was the only one without a B-rig on a day when they were really needed. He managed to finish in every race and well placed in some too.
Kim Potter, who is a regular with the Risdon Brook Club was a welcome spectator today. Kim is keen to bring his boat to our next DF95 day.
I think that it is great that attendance at our race meetings has generally not been affected by the quite bitter winter that we are having. One missing today was Ron Cullen who is trying to shake off a persistent cold. Get well soon Ron and back on the water.
I managed third place overall today with a mixed bag of results. Second went to Trout who had three race wins in his total. Todays winner was ‘The Smiling Asassin’ Phil Turnbull. Phil had an ‘all podium’ scorecard after discards were accounted for. Well sailed Phil!
Coffee and a chat is always a nice feature of sailing at the Vineyard and the hot drink was genuinely appreciated by us all today.
Shorty.

Nice write up Shorty and well done to all in the fearsome conditions of the day.
The article on the 100th anerversary of model yachting is well worth watching.
