A beautiful, sunny day with blue skies and a light (2 or 3 knot) Westerly breeze set the scene for today’s DF95 racing at Puddleduck Vineyard. A bit weary from the National Radio Sailing championships I wasn’t going to sail today myself but it was such a nice day in the end I just had too! In all fourteen skippers made the start today which is pretty much the ideal number to be racing on the Puddleduck course.
It was great to see Trout back on his feet properly today and driving a rather sporty new Carolla too! Trout is still not quite up to racing yet but took on the race officer job today and kept us all on best behavior. Thanks for your work, Phil. A figure-8 course was used today which is often best when the wind is swinging as it means that one way or the other you are likely to ensure some upwind work.
On a day when the podium was well shared by the skippers Bodge was the only one to record two race wins. Well done, Bodge! As far as the overall positions went, I was able to claim third spot after dashing my handicap with good performances in the early races. Jammy was second and, quite unusually for him, no race wins today!
Today’s winner was Nick Connor a clear 5 points ahead and super-consistent given that his discards were both fifth places. When Nick joined the group a couple of months ago, I did remark that it would only be a matter of time before he was ‘whipping our butts’. Well, I suppose that you didn’t need Nostradamus to see it coming. Very well sailed today Nick.
A date for your diary: The Peter Smith Memorial for DF65’s will be held on Saturday March 15th. It is always a great day and the biggest day on the Puddleduck race calendar so save the day!

A hearty poem from Shorty….
Ahoy, mateys! A tale I shall spin, of a day fine and fair,
At Puddleduck Vineyard, where DF95s did fare.
A gentle breeze, a westerly blow,
Set the scene for racing, a grand and glorious show.Though weary from championships, I couldn’t resist,
To join the fourteen skippers, a sight to be kissed.
Trout, back on his feet, though not yet in the race,
Took on the RO’s role, keeping us all in our place.A figure-eight course, ’twas the path we did sail,
When winds be a-changin’, this course will not fail.
Bodge, he be the one, with two victories grand,
While I, yours truly, took third in the land.Jammy, he sailed well, though no wins did he claim,
But Connor, young Nick, he rose to great fame.
Five points ahead, he sailed with such might,
“He’ll whip our butts,” I said, and I was right! So raise a glass, me hearties, to Connor so bold,
His victory today, a tale to be told.
And to all the skippers, who braved the blue sea,
A grand day of racing, at Puddleduck, d’ye see! -

No worries Nick. The poem was generated with a “pirate language” twist.
