      Orford Sailing Group – RG/DF65s 17.11.23

The inaugural Orford / Puddleduck handicap sailing day was held at The Orford Pond in near perfect conditions with plenty of sun, good humour and the breeze …………. Lets just say 1-10 knts breeze swirling around from all points of the compass which kept 10 skippers on their toes or should I say thumbs 😊.

Our hosts, Dave Read, Bruce Palmer and Ray Phillips did a brilliant job organising the venue, with great signage so us southerners didn’t get lost. (Despite Bodge’s best efforts on the website 😊) The buoys are manually thrown in and retrieved by Dave who did a great job as the course was much larger than what he is used to.

There were the usual missed buoy roundings, a few boats rafted up at times and a few port / starboard incidents that couldn’t be helped with the swirling breeze. Close racing was the order of the day with six different skippers taking line honours. Flash left his only race win till the last race when coming fourth at the last mark rounding to pass Stuart and Trout and pipping Bodge over the line by a bow bumper 😊

With seven skippers from Puddleduck, and three from Orford it was game on from the first button press. In the combined results, Stuart took the honours with 19 pts, closely followed by Trout and Bodge.

In the DF Only class, it was Trout first with 18pts, Bodge second 1pt adrift, Smiling Assassin third on 23pts and Flash on 24pts.

Thank you to everyone that attended today and especially Dav who sacrificed the last three races so he could attend to the wood fired BBQ, thank you Dav 😊.

We are hoping for another combined group sail day at Orford possibly March or April 2024

A good day by all. Where else could you get 3 different wind directions in 1 minute

I great day of fun in the sun. Conditions were a little variable making it possible to go from zero to hero in a split second, and back to zero even quicker. A great bunch of sailors and a well organised event. I will be back for the next one.
