A very cool south westerly of 15 – 20 knots set the scene for today’s Woody Regatta at Forcett Lakes. While it was nice and sunny those who chose to wear shorts quickly realised their mistake!

Six skippers met the challenge and B-rigs were the order of the day. Towards the end of the day the wind picked up a knot or two and it was becoming difficult to maintain steerage even with the smaller rig, yet it was great to see the beautiful wooden hulls fly.

It was good to meet Peter Haworth who made the trip down from Launceston. Peter enjoyed the day and had two race wins to smile about on the drive home.

The format for the Woody Regatta is to all start the first race on scratch, then handicap penalties of 15, 10 and 5 seconds are applied to first, second and third placings each race. This format means that it the best skipper on the day wins as it is the same for all, yet all skippers get a real chance to win races as the handicaps get progressively larger. One race discard was allowed today.

Overall it was Lisa Blackwood sailing her Night Hawk who took out third place. Lisa may have gone close to winning but had to pull out of two races with gear problems. Phil Jackman took out second place just a point ahead of Lisa and consistently making the race podium today. But it was Wayne Behrens who stole the show. I thought that Buzzy had cooked his chips early with three wins and two second places in the first five races, but he was still able to find placings in the remaining races even with a huge handicap. Buzzy would have finished the day with a handicap of 95 seconds only the handicap board wouldn’t accomodate that so we had to recalibrate everyone down so that we could fit him in. Congratulations to Wayne, Phil and Lisa and in fact to all who sailed today because the racing was so great.

Having lunch together at the end of the day is always a real feature of these events and today it gave time to share share some stories of radio sailing history.

Enjoyed the day guys, well worth the trip down.  You’ll have to stop giving me the chocolates, they tend not to make it home 🙂

I’ll see if I can get hold of Terry’s photos as well and post them.
